Ann leaves theatre and is startled
she figures out what's going on--
and spots an unexpected friend--
and cuts the cake
Alan returned to the stage in March as a German Jewish psychoanalyst in Montevideo, in an adaptation of Francine Prose's novel, Hungry Hearts. Here he is in rehearsal, with a pen standing in for the cigar that was his main prop. More photos when available.
The play was the final production for Women at Play, a local group founded some twelve years ago, now shutting down. Katherine Burkman--well known as a Pinter and Beckett scholar, now retired from OSU's Department of English, adapted and directed the Prose novel. Alan's Dr. Zweivel was only on for about five minutes--a good, short cameo of a scene. The play (and novel) follow a Yiddish theatre company touring Ansky's The Dybbuk to South America, when the leading lady is possessed by a real dybbuk in Buenos Airies. Dr. Zweivel attempts to psycholanalyze her at the next stop.
